The
entire Hastings Cutoff is drawn in yellow on the map, left. The Wasatch
Mountains were the first major obstacles after leaving Fort Bridger.
The Great Salt Desert was the second. Mountain ranges, one after the
other, in Nevada added many more. The Ruby Mountain Range required
emigrants to travel many miles south to flank these peaks. Then came
the twisting trail through South Fork Canyon before connecting with
the California Trail. The end of the canyon is seen south, across
I-80, above. John Bidwell avoided much of this cutoff. |
