| The
snowcapped Pequop Mountains appear on the horizon at Silver Zone Pass,
left. Hastings Cutoff followed the edge of the mountains south to
Flower Pass. At Silver Zone Pass the pioneers continued west to Big
Springs, at the base of the Pequops, to stock up with water before
heading south. We followed the tracks southwest, bivouacking near
Shafter, an abandoned town along the track. We needed to stay near
passable roads to get water from our supply vehicle. Top left, trek
