Our team had a good night's rest with broken hay
bales under our tents. Top left, expedition leader, Lee Bergthold
greets the morning in the Temoke Ranch pasture where we were allowed
to bivouac. The ranch is on the Ruby Valley Indian Reservation.
Top right, cows graze in the pasture next to our campsite. Pearl
Peak, at 10,847ft. reflects the morning sun in the background. Bergthold
discusses road washout repair with one of the workers, above. Heavy
spring runoff, from the numerous creeks, left, took their toll.
The ranchers don't complain because they need the runoff water to
replenish the water table in the valley. They depend on irrigation
to grow their crops. It's mostly hay to feed cattle, which takes
a lot of water.
