This
site was the last camp for the Donner-Reed Party in Huntington Valley.
The next morning they would enter South Fork Canyon. James Frazier
Reed extolled the natural richness of the surroundings, above center.
In the first part of this long sentence, he gives geographical hints
to the location of this spot: "Thu [Thursday] 24 this day North
west we mad[e] down Sinking Creek valley [Huntington Valley] about
16[miles] and encamped at the foot of Red earth hill...." The
previous night they had camped near the confluence of Huntington and
Smith Creeks. The familiar rail section plaque stands beside County
HWY 715A at Red Bluff. South Fork Humboldt River winds north toward
South Fork Reservoir, top left and left. |
