John
Bidwell, blazing the trail through this area, before it became the
infamous Hastings Cutoff, commented on the ubiquitous sagebrush: "The
principal growth, on plain and hill alike, was the interminable sagebrush,
and often it was difficult, for miles at a time to break a road through
it, and sometimes a lightly laden wagon would be overturned. But it
was not wholly useless; where large enough it made excellent fuel...and
shelter [for animals]." We took advantage of sagebrush as a fuel
when available. Top right, from left: Connie Simpkins, Lee Bergthold,
and Tina Bowers prepare to head west to Highway 93 - 10 miles away
according to the sign. Low on water, we hoped to meet our resupply
vehicle there. John, the resupply person had managed to find us at
Mound Springs. However, the heat in Clover Valley caused us to deplete
our supply. Lee tried mirror signals to contact John to no avail.
We trekked on to find water at Warm Springs Ranch. The r.r. segment
sign aligns HCO east and west, right. |
