This
sign, left, stands beside the main north-south road. A four wheel
drive road goes past the sign, headed west. Our party left our first
bivouac, at Little Salt Spring, and climbed this road to the pass.
The sign text and map explain the use of this trail during the great
migration west at the middle of the 19th Century. The two journal
quotes, above, represent two major emigrant parties using this route.
James John was with the Bidwell-Bartleson party; the Bryant-Russell
party was on the trail a month ahead of the ill-fated Donner-Reed
party. |
