Leaving their camp of July 4, Lewis' troop would trek east along the Blackfoot River, watching for signs of Indians. After a lunch stop, they came to the first major river "about 35 yards wide, which flows in with a rapid current from some snow topped mountains on the north...."(Gass's Journal). This is the Clearwater River.
