Lewis Return Trail
The flattened ridges, in the left image, seen from above, could be the general area where the Blackfeet were looking down at the Lewis men. The small dot, far left center is the "Fight Site," with the Two Medicine River behind it. The images of horses in the area show how easily objects may appear about a mile away. The Cut Bank town murals recapture the meeting scene.
Leaving Camp Disappointment a rainy 7/26 morning, Lewis and his 3 team members headed southeast to Two Medicine River. He knew it joined Cut Bank Creek to become Marias River; his route to rendezvous with other team members. Climbing a hill to survey the rough terrain; Lewis,"had scarcely ascended the hills before I discovered to my left at the distance of a mile about 30 horses...I discovered several indians on the top of an eminence just above them....I resolved to make the best of our situation and to approach them in a friendly manner." There were 8 young men.
