Lewis & Clark Trail - Montana
Great Falls
After camping below the Great Falls, June 14, 1805, Lewis continued up the north side of the Missouri looking for a suitable place for portage around the falls. He sent Joseph Shields back to notify Clark that they were, indeed, on the Missouri - until he found the Great Falls, he wasn't sure. He intended to return for dinner once he determined the extent of the rapids. Five miles later he found Crooked Falls.
