Ella
Mae Howard led us on a second hike at Eagle Creek. This one took us
up to a cliff wall containing a few petroglyphs, top left. These ancient
inscriptions are weathering and may not be detectable in a few years.
Ella Mae said experts had not determined their age, but they were
executed long before known tribes inhabited the area. Left, Ella Mae
gives us background information about a cluster of teepee rings on
a hike prior to the Eagle Creek hikes. Both Lewis and Clark took note
of abandoned Indian camps as they traveled through the White Cliffs
of the Missouri. They surmised that the villages may have contained
100 lodges or teepees, possibly belonging to traveling Blackfeet hunting
parties. Above, hikers return to their canoes on the Missouri River.
