Missouri Breaks
These scenes could have come from the cameras of Corps members - had the camera been invented then. Top left, tall cottonwood trees tower above my campsite. Left, a curve in the Missouri River with "breaks" along the margin. Breaks are really steep ravines caused by erosion of sandstone hills. Above, footprints moving up river along the bank. You could imagine they were made by soldiers hauling the pirogues along by elkskin ropes.
