Gass was with the elk hunters when they found the Falls March 1, 1806:
"There is a large river that flows into the southeast part of
Haley's Bay; upon which, about 20 miles from its mouth, our hunters
discovered falls, which had about 60 feet of a [per]pendicular pitch."
The hunters returned to Fort Clatsop on the 5th, having seen no elk
