Numbered markers along the Clatsop Loop Trail explain natural features. Tillamook and Clatsop tribal members made this trail to connect villages along the coast. Guide notes for these markers: 12; evidence of forest clearance by natives. Open space grew berries and edible plants as well as elk grazing. 13; salal bushes which Clark described and used to pull himself up steep terrain. Center, salal berries an essential native food.
