The
spring the Fort Clatsop tenants most likely used flows not far from
the back gate. Visitors can find it by following a path, either through
the gate, or by walking around the right side of the fort. There's
an open area with an interpretive sign. The spring flows beneath a
tangle of bushes and ferns, right. After enduring bad water, causing
diarrhea and stomach complaints, this source of refreshing spring
water must have been a blessing. Once snugly ensconced in their fort,
having a spring that close made it easier to brave the almost constant
rain to retrieve "pure water." |
