An
interpretive sign at Chinook Landing describes a major Chinookan village
nearby that the Corps encountered on November 4, 1805. Clark counted
52 canoes and was introduced to the wapato root: "This root they
call the Wap-pa-to ... it has an agreeable taste and answers verry
well in place of bread. we purchased about 4 bushels of this root
and divided it to our party." Clark's drawing of house plans,
left. |
