The
Corps struggled past the final cascades on the Columbia going west
on November 1, 1805 just above Brant - now Bradford Island. They faced
the same obstacle on their return journey. This time it would be the
first of many that they knew well. The dam system along the Columbia
submerged them. Top left, the northwest end of the island bristles
with towers. You get a good view of the island from the top of the
visitors center. Clark described the passage down on November 1, 1805:
"we Set about takeing our Small Canoe and all the baggage by
land 940 yards of bad Slippery and rockey way.... we got the 4 large
Canoes over by Slipping them over the rocks on poles placed across
from one rock to another...." |
