Cahokia
Mounds State Historic Site Interpretive Center holds a great collection
of artifacts. Bottom left, arrow and spear points and potsherd - William
Clark mentions finding such items among mounds while exploring near
the camp on Wood River. A mural in the center depicts Monks Mound
as it may have been at the height of Cahokia's habitation. This largest
of North American prehistoric earth structures rises 100 feet above
the ancient plaza. A large building on the top housed the chief and
was the seat of government and center of ceremonies. The view southwest
from the top shows downtown St Louis and Gateway Arch. |
