| Part
of the canoe construction presentation at Sakajawea State Park included
an explanation of the type of red and white paints covered the pirogues
used on the Missouri River segment of the journey, top left. The black
stuff is pine pitch. The Corps patched cracks in the canoes with it.
Since the log canoes were difficult to control, they were damaged
colliding with rocks and debris in the rivers. Ropes, right, were
woven from sliced animal hides, especially elk or deer. They were
also created from plant material when no hides were available. |
