| The
Confluence Project circle, at Sacajawea State Park, with the word
"Tule Mats" engraved on it, also has tule grass growing
in its raised bed, top right. Mats were used as coverings over pole
frames for winter lodges. A fine example stands in the interpretive
center. Signs along the walkways explain the local culture and note
Lewis and Clark's passage through the area, top left. The Captains
didn't understand the salmon's life cycle and refused to consume any
dead fish. They traded for dogs as a food supply instead. Natives
came from miles away to trade for these salmon, a main trade item
for Columbia River tribes. |
