left, trail sign at the junction of the Lewis And Clark Trail and
the Clark Tree spur trail. The Corps camped near Cedar Creek and this
tree. It certainly looks old enough to have been here in 1805. The
venerable giant died in 2003. Capt. Lewis came through this area on
September 21, 1805. He saw Clark's camp of the 19th. The Corps got
a late start that morning, having trouble rounding up horses, But
Lewis skipped the camp spot and moved on. He did notice the large
cedars:" The Arborvita [cedar tree] increases in quantity and
size. I saw several ...today large enough to form...perogues of at
least 45 feet in length." |
