The
Bitterroot River flows north through the Bitterroot Valley. Highway
93 follows the river as did Lewis and Clark. Most likely Toby, the
guide, knew it as a well traveled Indian trail. The river runs through
private ranch land in the valley - except for this national wildlife
refuge. It preserves a small area along the Bitterroot River just
as the Corps might have seen it on September 9, 1805. I jumped to
the east side of the river at Hamilton and continued north on County
Road 269. In Stevensville I followed the signs on County Road 203
to the refuge. Forest fire smoke smudged out the mountain view. |
