Captain
Lewis spent most of the Illinois encampment time in St. Louis. Purchasing
supplies occupied most of his time. He had to plan for at least a
year's supplies for the 40+ man corps and trade goods for an unknown
number of Native American tribes. A peek into the supply room reveals
a mix of beads, flags etc. for trade and powder horns and shirts for
the troops. We know from ledger entries that barrels of salt pork
and boxes of powdered soup were included as a back-up food supply. |
