Beaverhead Rock
State Monument
On August 8th, as the combined Corps of Discovery moved their canoes up the Jefferson/Beaverhead River, Sacajawea recognized this limestone formation. Captain Lewis once again "determined" to strike out overland to find Sacajawea's people. He took his expert hunter, Drouillard, John Shields, and Hugh McNeal; but NOT Sacajawea. Lewis's team traveled four times as fast overland as Clark's crews towed the large canoes up the narrow, winding Beaverhead River. From hear to Lehmi Pass there are a great number of signs with accurate information covering this segment of the journey. I photographed, and now include, parts of them. They tell the story far better than I could. I continued driving south on MT HWY 41, following the river.
