Yorks
Islands Fishing Access, a few miles south of Townsend, has a campground.
I stayed overnight and had time to find some "wildlife."
Captain Lewis described a variety of snakes he found in the area.
The black snake, top left and right, may be a western hog-nosed snake.
Moving through in July, the Corps found wild berries growing everywhere.
I was here on September 1st, 2007. These wild rose hips, above, were
similar to the roses they found throughout the trip. The islands are
named for Clark's slave, York. I assume Lewis named the islands. Clark,
without York, was traveling on land. |
