I
returned to the Missouri side of the river and headed north on US
HWY 59 to St Joseph. The city was a staging area for emigrant crossing
the Missouri and heading west on the Oregon Trail. The Corps camped
just north of here on July 7, 1804. They camped right here on the
return journey on Sept. 12, 1806. There was no town then. Working
my way toward the river, I found a riverside promenade with a great
view of the Missouri and another granite marker. Sgt Ordway camped
alone on the opposite bank. |
