A
small herd of horses greets us as we approach Franklin Lake. Top left,
Lee Bergthold pauses "to talk to the animals." The lake
spreads along the Ruby Valley beneath the Medicine Range to the east.
This lake and Ruby Lake, to the south, reveal the level of the water
table in the valley. Even in late summer emigrants found plentiful
water and grass, as well as cooler temperatures in this high valley.
But they wondered when they would be able to turn west again. Our
team continued south on Ruby Valley Road (County HWY 788). |
