May
22, 2006 - day 17 of our team's trek along HCO. We had gained the
top of Overland Pass the previous afternoon. In rain, hail, and high
wind, we made camp about 5 miles west of the pass in an area designated
as "Wild House Territory." It is written in green lettering,
and outlined in green on my map. We roped down our tents in a strong
wind. That night we heard horses whinnying all around our campsite.
The next morning we turned north into Huntington Valley. Here, a wild
horse noticed expedition leader, Lee Bergthold, left. As Bergthold
and team member, Tina Bowers moved closer, the horse galloped across
the trail and examined us at some distance, above. The Donner Party
started their first full day in James Reed's "Sinking Creek Valley"
on September 22, 1846. |
