Moonrise over the Toano Range, above, may have greeted
19th century travelers headed south in Goshute Valley as it did
for our HCO trekking team in May, 2006. Flower Pass is over the
right, foreground ridge, top right image. The Pass threads the Pequop
Mountains. The railroad track runs southwest, meeting HCO at Luke,
then swings west toward Flower Pass. We followed the roadbed to
the pass. HCO bows southwest to Flowery Springs before heading for
the pass. We couldn't locate the springs where the Donner Party
had "Mad Woman Camp." Apparently, the tension built during
the Great Salt Desert crossing exploded among the women. Maybe scenes
of their dead animals, like this cow in Goshute Valley, and lost
cherished possessions pushed them over the edge.
