Pioneer
wagon trains aimed for this oasis while slogging across the Great
Salt Lake Desert, middle of photo, left. The spring, originally known
as Pilot Spring, was renamed in honor of the tragic Donner Party.
None of the large trees mentioned in journals remain. New growth branches
out from an old cottonwood stump, top right. Bamboo, bent by a pre-
storm gale, rings the spring, above. Top left, the spring and view
south. The images are mid-September scenes - recorded at the same
time of year that the Donner Party rested here before the push over
Bidwell Pass toward the junction with the California Trail. |
