interpretive panel presents a great visual to explain the complex
operation the Corps was about to execute at "8 A M" (Clark's
note) July, 3, 1806. Both parties would be using rivers as geographical
reference points; but used horses and foot travel for most of these
excursions. Clark noted that he had 50 horses with his 21 member detachment.
Most of the horses had been kept with Nez Perce Indians while the
Corps made canoes and traveled west of the Rockies to the Pacific
in 1805. |

Clark intended to trade most of the horses to the Mandans farther
east. His route, along the Yellowstone would be easier than Lewis'
side trips.
Clark did send a crew down the Missouri in canoes recovered at Camp
Fortunate to help Lewis' party recover cached items at the Great
Falls portage sites; Lewis left 6 men there.
